How sweet to die at sea. How sad it is for me. Oh, my beautiful sailor man, tonight you have found a new love. Come dawn and I will be here alone as you fell her cold embrace. Let the sad green waves wash over me. How sweet to die at sea.

Rosa, Rosa... Where do you think you are going? Rosa, Rosa... It's time to throw off your girlish airs. Rosa, Rosa... Don't you know the samba awaits you? Rosa, Rosa... The samba and I await you.

In my dream, the river spoke in the voice of the melting snow, the melancholy voice of those who leave these beloved mountains and travel the same long roads of our destiny. In my dream, the river sang of the moon and the whistling wind that linger behind in hope of our wistful reunion. In my dream, the river cried: If only you can, return. If only you can, go back.

about

Traditional music from South America, performed by Marcello Costa (acoustic guitar, vocal), sampled and re-imagined by Ian Gibbins (keyboard, computer).

Although he was born in Italy, Marcello spent much of his youth in Argentina before returning to Italy. In this time, he developed a passion for and a deep knowledge of a wide variety of South American music styles.

In 2008, Marcello made some quick recordings of some South American songs so Ian could learn them for their first public performance together. Ian and Marcello were both very busy with their research and teaching at Flinders University, and Ian had not been making electronic music for very long at that time. Unsurprisingly, there were many flaws in the original recordings of the songs, which Ian used to advantage in sampling, resampling and re-arranging the pieces. This is how it turned out...

Since making these recordings, Ian and Marcello have performed many different versions of this music, including some of the interpretations here.

In 2024, Ian took advantage of new audio processing technology to remaster some of the original recordings made by Marcello. They are added here as Tracks 19-22.
